Fort Stewart cover over 280,000 acres and is one of the largest military installations in the Eastern United States. Fort Stewart is a mobilization station for troops getting ready to deploy in Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as a site for the annual two-week training for National Guard soldiers. The acreage is used as tank and small arms ranges year round with little time lost due to bad weather. Fort Stewart is located near Hinesville, Georgia. Housing at Fort Stewart is privatized and offers over 3,000 family housing units at Fort Stewart. The homes are separated into 11 different neighborhoods with apartment or houses from two to five bedrooms in size. Married soldiers are required to live off post until on-post housing becomes available. Homes for sale or rent are also offered in nearby communities. The housing referral office at the Soldier Service Center offers soldiers wishing to live off post help with BAH rates and available properties. For more information, call (912) 767-4278/9728 for assistance. Temporary lodging is located one block from the Commissary, Main Post exchange and a fitness center. Both double and single rooms with kitchenettes are available. A few rooms do allow pets for a $45 nonrefundable fee. Reservations can be made 24 hours a day, so contact the Fort Stewart Lodging at 912-767-8384 or 912-767-3896.
Fort Stewart has three elementary schools that are operated by the Department of Defense Education Activity office. There are no middle schools or high schools on Fort Stewart. Children who are in grade 7-12 attend school in the local community. Bus transportation is provided depending on the distance to the school. Before and after school care is provided by School Age Services. The Liberty County School System is available to those living off post and includes two high schools, three middle schools, and eight elementary schools. Home schooling information is also available through the School Liaison office. Contact them at 912-767-4491 The Liberty County Board of Education for special curriculum and requirements will also have information. Contact Central Registration for specific questions at 912-767-6533. The Fort Stewart Child Development Center is located in Building 403 and offers full day care, hourly care and a pre-K program. For information on specific programs, call 912-767-3203. The center is open Monday through Friday.
